House devil, Street angel is a common phrase among parents speaking about their children and the different personalities that they can have in different places. Today’s Gospel points to the fact the people are not always as they seem.
The mountain visit was the same; the apostles saw Jesus, Son of God, radiant in prayer and, in the middle of all contexts, the passion was announced, and they saw the person behind the face.
This truth here is that Jesus is intimately united to God the Father. So, following God not just in action but prayer that leads to action. We often hear about a great Christian because he or she gives money to the poor. However, Christianity is more than just giving money to others and while we are very thankful for the good lives of many people, we can also say that the full Christian life includes prayer and gathering as a Christian family for Eucharist.
It also involves community – the three were called to witness and help each other to remember the full life of Jesus. Community brings the word of God alive in a real way. The community of Church brings a fuller faith to all.
Prayer leads to actions for others and actions lead back to prayer. This Lent let us transfigure the lives of others, let us be the people of transfiguration.
