Mark and Julia were neighbours and childhood friends. They shared laughter, dreams and secrets, forming a bond that seemed unbreakable. However, one day, during an argument, Mark said hurtful words that deeply wounded Julia. From that moment, their friendship was shattered. Julia, consumed by the pain of his words, became filled with resentment and thoughts of revenge. They stopped speaking, avoided each other, and their once joyful interactions turned into cold, angry glances whenever they crossed paths.
One day, while attending Mass, Julia listened to a gospel passage that struck her heart:
“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” (Luke 6:27)
These words unsettled her. How could I forgive him after what he has done to me? she wondered. Yet, deep inside, she knew that if she found the strength to forgive, she could finally heal.
Throughout the week, she reflected on this message. It was not easy, but she eventually decided to write to Mark. In her message, she expressed her pain but also her willingness to forgive him. When Mark received the message, he was taken aback. As he read her words, a wave of emotion overcame him. He realized the depth of the hurt that he had caused.
They agreed to meet and talk. When the moment arrived, an uneasy silence filled the space between them. Neither knew how to begin. But after a long pause, they reached out, shook hands and reconciled.
This story reminds us of the power and importance of forgiveness. Hatred and judgment imprison the heart but love and forgiveness set it free. True peace comes not from revenge but from letting go and choosing compassion.
Similarly, in the First Reading, we see David’s example, that revenge does not bring peace – it only fuels more conflict and suffering. Choosing love over hatred is never easy, but God calls us to do so. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can embrace this path and find healing.
Let us sow love and compassion instead of hatred and revenge, for in forgiveness, we find true freedom.
