A Reflection for the Third Sunday of Advent, 11th December 2022

For this Third Sunday of Advent, I thought it might be useful to first reflect on the Advent season, its symbolism and what meaning it holds in our modern world. The word itself comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “coming.” Over time, Advent has evolved and, since the Middle Ages, has become synonymous with marking Christ’s first coming which we celebrate at Christmas.  Today, we celebrate Advent over the four weeks leading up to Christmas each year.

Within our own Irish tradition, An Bóthar (the Cow’s trail) was a mediocre type of road.  Its width was laid down by law to accommodate two cows. This was defined in the following way, If two cows are traveling along a bóthar, side by side, one cow should have enough room to turn right around.

A Reflection for the First Sunday of Advent, 27th November 2022

27th November 2022 marks the First Sunday of Advent this year. Advent extends over the last four Sundays before Christmas. The word Advent comes from the Latin advenio, "to come to", and refers to the coming of Christ. Advent reminds Christians of the sacred meaning of Christmas, that is, the birth of Jesus. Therefore, it is a time of preparation and celebration.

A Reflection for the Feast of Christ the King, 20th November 2022

From the Mass readings for today the word that jumps out for me is King. It is mentioned six times. Relating to Jesus as king, especially in the context of today’s reading, requires an informed faith.   The secular image of kingship is pomp, wealth, as well as military and political power. Jesus did not portray the status of king.  When He first appeared as king, he was accompanied by poor people waving tree branches while He sat on a donkey!...
