Soul Food for Sundays

A Reflection for the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 29th January 2023

Power in Weakness and Wisdom in Foolishness – Be of Happy Attitudes! Today in our world many people are wounded, lonely and lost. Often, many have lost an ability to trust and love. Each day we see many examples of vulnerable groups wanting their voice to be heard and included. In our media, mainstream and social, we learn about campaigns and protests for women’s and children’s rights, the protection of nature, migrant rights, better healthcare, better education, and anti-racism campaigns as well as efforts to end corruption ranging from governments to churches so that justice may be realised in unjust societies.

A call to a special vocation. Each one of us has a vocation, called by God to a particular task to be accomplished while we are in this world. In today’s readings, we see three persons, Isaiah, Paul and Jesus, who were entrusted with a special vocation. It is God who calls us. His call is an invitation to participate in His mission to save humanity, a special vocation entrusted to particular persons.

Young man walking through a church ruin

A Reflection for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, Sunday 8th January 2023

It is interesting to take note that Jesus sought John the Baptist to receive baptism. Jesus did not wait for John to find him. This action in itself speaks of the missionary attitude that Jesus’ life expressed in every action and every word. At the baptism Jesus hear the words, ‘You are my beloved’. By listening to the spirit of God, Jesus found John and, in this experience, he experienced the love of his father.
