This latest book by John O’Brien C.S.Sp. explores transformative renewal in the Catholic Church and recounts the efforts of the late Pope Francis to implement the vision and orientation of Vatican II in Church renewal.

Emphasising ‘the primacy of the pastoral’ in Catholic theology and based on evidence from deep listening to participants in sustained Church renewal projects in Britain and Ireland, directions of transformative renewal are identified and six pastoral initiatives unfolding at local level are examined.

The author suggests a strong degree of coherence between these directions and the Synodal pathway, identifies concrete directions of reform, and posits that the inaugurated Church of the 3rd millennium will be characterised by a permanent process of transformative renewal.

The book, launched in February 2026, was published by LIT Verlag Münster. It is available on Amazon (ISBN-10: 3643917112; ISBN-13: 978-3643917119).
