Nsukka, Nigeria – From small town to Cathedral parish!

The opening some weeks ago of a huge ‘new’ cathedral in Nsukka brought back so many memories. I was one of 11 young Irish Spiritan priests who arrived in Nigeria’s Port Harcourt in 1963, a year after I had been ordained and having completed induction and an Igbo language course.

Fr Michael McMahon C.S.Sp. – almost a half-century in Kenya!

A Dubliner, Fr Michael (pictured left) was ordained in 1966 and appointed to St Michael’s College in his home city where he taught science – and coached rugby! In 1972, he joined several dozen other Irish Spiritans on overseas mission in Kenya. Having studied the Kikamba language, he taught in high schools in Tala and Kabaa.

Spiritan schools mark Founder’s Feast Day, 2nd October 2020

Some 5,000 students of Spiritan schools in Ireland, and their teachers, answered the virtual call to prayer on Friday 2nd October, Feast Day of the Spiritan founder, Claude Poullart des Places.

Spiritans in formation in Vietnam

Some 4 dozen Vietnamese men are currently in formation to become Spiritan missionaries. The expected historic ordination in 2019 of 6 Spiritans from Vietnam has had to be postponed due to restrictions linked to Covid-19.
